Old Rosehearty, Sandhaven & New Aberdour by Douglas G Lockhart

Rosehearty and Sandhaven, on the north east coast of Scotland, experienced speedy development linked to the fishing industry and specifically to the East Coast herring industry boom in the mid-19th century. When the herring shoals decreased, the villages diversified into tourism but the short season limited the growth of the industry.

New Aberdour was a tradesman village serving the local region. Today the area is a popular residential spot with many folk commuting quite a distance to work, preferring a high quality of family life over convenience. The charm of the area is beautifully demonstrated in the collection of photographs here.

With a mixture of sandy beaches and imposing granite cliffs, it makes a picturesque place to photograph, as shown in this book. And there are the remains of old holdfasts and castles, such as Pitsligo Castle outside Rosehearty that offer glimpses into times gone by.
